Filters Pane in the Power BI

In this exercise, we will learn about the filters pane in our power bi report.

1. Filters in the Filters pane The Filters pane has three sections:
• Filters on all pages
• Filters on this page
• Filters on this visual

a) The “Filters on all pages” section defines report-level filters, which apply to all report pages and visuals. Report-level filters are global filters.

b) The “Filters on this page” section defines page-level filters, which apply to all visuals on a specific page, adding to any existing report-level filters. For example, if a report-level filter restricts data to the country of India, and a page-level filter restricts data to the state of Haryana, then both filters are in effect: Country is India and State is Haryana.

c) The “Filters on this visual” section defines visual-level filters. This section is only visible when one visual is in focus because visual-level filters apply only to a single visual; they add to any existing report-level and page-level filters. Extending the previous example, if a visual-level filter restricts data to the city of Panipat, then three filters are in effect: Country is India, State is Haryana, and City is Panipat.

Unlike report and page-level filters, a visual-level filter can filter by using a measure. When a measure filters a visual, it's used to eliminate groups. For example, consider a column chart visual that groups by store. A measure filter could eliminate groups (stores) where the total store sales are less than a certain amount.

2. Rename filters When we are editing the Filters pane, we can double-click the title to edit it. Renaming is useful if we want to update the filter card to make more sense for our end users. Keep in mind renaming the filter card does not rename the display name of the field in the fields list. It just changes the display name used in the filter card.

When we hover on the filter card then it shows the actual field or measure name in the power bi report.

3. Hide or Lock Filters We can hide or lock individual filter cards.

The following are the points to lock or hide filters: • If we hide the filter, they can't even see it. Hiding filter cards is typically useful if we need to hide data cleanup filters that exclude nulls or unexpected values.
• We can lock filters to ensure that report consumers cannot remove or modify them, but they can see the filter.

In the Filters pane, we can select, clear, Lock filter or Hide filter in a filter card.

Note: We can also configure the Filters pane state to flow with our report bookmarks. The pane's open, close, and visibility state are all bookmarkable.

We can hide the entire Filters pane to ensure that report consumers cannot open it.

4. Hide the Filters pane while editing We can hide the Filters pane while we are editing our report when we need extra space. To hide go to the View tab, and then click on Filters which allows us to show or hide the Filters pane.
